View the post for February 17 for an explanation of my Lenten Project On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. Sometimes when I think of living water I picture a quiet mountain stream. But when I read this passage again a new image came to mind - an image of this most unusual waterfall that just appears to come out of the rocks. Running Eagle falls actually comes from a stream created by runoff from Two Medicine Lake. When the stream reaches a sinkhole it bursts through the rocks above and creates this powerful waterfall.
Jesus promises us that when we follow him rivers of living water will flow from within us like the water that flows through the rocks to create Running Eagle Falls. This living water will not only wash us clean but it will give us the power of water to transform, the power to hope, the power to keep going through the wilderness, the power to love our enemies, and the power to share the Living Water with others. Prayer Lord Jesus Cleanse our hearts and let the rivers of living water transform us and flow through us to all that are thirsty. Amen

The seas have lifted up, Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; I stood on the trail and watched in amazement at the power of the waves as they crashed against the shore. It was a little scary to even watch them from the safety of the trail. As each wave hit the shore it drowned out all other sound. There was such beauty and power in the waves that day that I just wanted to stand and watch them. I stand in awe of the creator of the sea; this mighty God that knows and loves me. The Lord reigns over the waves and I want him to reign over my heart this day.
Prayer Mighty God We worship you and stand in awe of your power and might. Reign in our hearts this day. Amen “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Have you seen the Milky Way? It takes some effort. You must find a place that is really dark, a place where all the familiar things that you can see in daylight are no longer discernible. In our busy world we don’t often take the time to sit in a single place long enough to watch the sun set and the sky become dark. When you do find that really dark place to sit, look to the southern sky and you will see the Milky Way. Sometimes you can’t see it - the sky is filled with clouds, the moon shines too brightly, or it isn't the right time of year. On that really dark night as you look to the heavens in amazement, this beautiful sight imprints an image on your heart of the greatness of God who calls each star by name as he brings them forth each night. This same God knows your name and you are as important to him as each star. He made you in his image. The next time there is a clear night and a new moon go to a really dark place and look to the heavens. Take a picture with your mind’s eye and store it in your memory. See the power and majesty of God. Worship him and he will bring beauty to all your darkness.
Prayer Creator of the Heavens We stand in awe of the heavens, the countless stars, and your mighty power and strength. We worship you and thank you for knowing us by name. Amen The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Since there was only a sidewalk between our motel room and Lake Michigan it was going to be easy to get sunrise pictures, or so I thought. As soon as I walked outside I was glad the safety of the motel was very close. I would have not wanted to be very far away from shelter that morning. The wind was getting stronger, the waves higher, and the clouds darker each second. You could feel the power of the coming storm. There were times when it was completely dark and then times when the light would break through the clouds bringing amazing color.
Sometimes we lose sight of the power of God. His power is like the power of a storm, elusive but present. Unlike an earthly storm that brings destruction, his power brings righteousness and justice. We don’t always understand God’s power, yet there are times when his light breaks into our lives and we stand amazed. The Lord reigns. Accepting the sovereignty of God isn’t easy for us. We fight too much to be our own king. But there is a peace that comes when we rest in the authority of a trustworthy and loving God that allows us to rejoice in the power of the storm. Prayer Great King We stand amazed at your power and bow in your presence. Amen For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. The attributes of God are revealed in the world God created. Take time to stop and think about what that means for our understanding of God.
The more I study and photograph nature the more I learn about God. Sure we are overcome with wonder when we see a grand vista, but there is so much more to learn about God in nature than just wonder. I have learned many things about God from waterfalls. Waterfalls show us the result of the power of water to wear away even the strongest rock. God’s powerful love can open even the hardest heart. Waterfalls change with the seasons, sometimes filled with water and sometimes only a trickle. God wields power the way we need it, sometimes in great bursts and sometimes in a slow and steady flow. We experience waterfalls with our senses, we see them, we hear them, we smell the fresh air they create. We experience God with our senses. Truly we have so much to learn about God from the world he created. Prayer Great and Powerful God, Open our eyes to your invisible attributes in the world you created. Teach us the deep attributes of your nature in the world you have created. Amen |
