The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” I found this small bud in a flower garden around an old homestead in Roan Mountain State Park. Maybe it was the unusual line of red along the edges or the small drops of morning dew still hanging on to its petals that drew me to it. I have no idea what kind of flower this bud became, but I was amazed by its beauty, its newness, its promise.
For those of us who have been Christians and heard the gospel for a long time, we can forget how amazing the story of God’s love is. May we recover the amazement of the people who first heard Jesus teaching. See his beauty. Stand in awe before the hands that created our world and then hung on a cross. As I don’t know what kind of flower this bud became I don’t always know where Jesus teaching will lead, for truly it is a new teaching. No matter where Jesus leads we know that he is faithful and true. If we bow before him in awe and wonder he will conquer our demons and bring us new life. Prayer Amazing God Fill us again with the wonder of your great love that sent Jesus to teach us how to live. Amen

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. There are times when our sorrow is so deep that we can only sit in quietness. The places that are normally filled with noise are now silent. It is in those times that God comes to us and we find our comfort in him. There will still be silence, but it is in this silence we see and feel God’s love and compassion most deeply. Only after we come to understand and feel God’s comfort in the silence of our own mourning are we able to share God’s comfort with others who mourn.
Prayer God of All Comfort Open our hearts to know the comfort only you can bring. Show us those today who need us to sit in silence beside them and share your comfort. Amen Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. The thing about watching a sunrise is that you see the light way before you see the sun. Sunrise gradually dispels the darkness of night. The story of creation begins with the Spirit of God hovering over dark chaotic waters. The first thing that God spoke into being was light. And he does this before He speaks the “lights in the sky” into being. He is the source of light for creation, bringing order to darkness and chaos.
In our lives today when everything is so dark, we look out over the chaotic waters and we can see light. God brings his light - through us, the followers of Christ. Each of us carry his light. We share a little glimmer of God’s light when we take the time to listen to someone who needs a listening friend; when we take time to share with someone who doesn’t have what we have; when we listen with our hearts to the heart of someone who doesn’t believe the same thing we do. To see a sunrise you must wait in the dark. As we wait in these dark days we know that “the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.” May we bring the light that shines in the darkness to our world. Prayer God of Light, Fill our hearts with your light. Show us the places today where we can bring a glimmer of light to those who need to see your light. Amen |
