View the post for February 14 for an explanation of my Lenten Project When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. For the past several years I have gone to the lake on Easter Sunday to watch the sunrise. I leave the house in the dark to get to the lake in plenty of time to see the horizon lighten up as sunrise approaches. I have come to see sunrise as a process more than a single moment in time, for you see the light of the sun before you see the bright golden ball rise over the horizon. Watching the sunrise on Easter morning has become a special time for me to reflect on those who experienced the resurrection on that first Easter Sunday.
But Easter morning is only the beginning of what many Christians call the Easter Season, the time between Easter Sunday and Pentecost. Like a sunrise the disciples’ understanding of resurrection was a process. They couldn’t believe what the women, who were the first at the tomb, ran to tell them. Even when they had seen the risen Jesus in Jerusalem later, some still struggled to believe. I often wonder if there were times during that first Easter Season when Jesus’s followers thought that the resurrection just couldn’t be real. It was certainly beyond their idea of what the Messiah was going to be. In my own faith journey I have found that I have seasons when I walk closer to Jesus and seasons when I just wonder how this story could be true. But Jesus never walks away. Even in seasons when my faith is weak he still beckons me to him. Like Mary Magdalene who went back to the tomb to look again, just to be sure, if we stop and listen we can hear him call our name. Whatever season of faith that you are walking through right now know that just as sure as spring follows winter the risen Jesus, who conquered death, will meet you in that season. Prayer Risen Christ Open our hearts to listen for you to call our names. Strengthen our faith and trust in you. Open our eyes to see your glory, greater than any sunrise. Amen
